Success Thought of the Day – 6/29/18: Finish Strong

JUNE 29, 2018
Written by James Rosseau

If the word quit is in your vocabulary, then the word finish is likely not.

Today is the last working day of the month and quarter for many people.  Some have already started celebrations having accomplished the goals they planned to achieve for those time periods while others have begun to count their losses.  In other words, many start the race strong, but not all finish strong.

The month is not over until the month is truly over.  You obviously have to play by whatever rules are relevant in your environment, be in your industry, employer timelines, etc., but don’t give up before the time is done.  One of the great facts revealed in the book The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks than Others Do in 12 Months is that more people get more done in the 4th quarter of the year than they do during the full course of the year.    Why?  Not because they get superhuman powers during that time, but because of their level of focus and commitment increases in the midst of the time crunch.

Amplify your focus and commitment with the time you have, with a sense of purpose and integrity towards doing your best to reach the goals you set out to achieve for this time period!

Finish strong and have a great day!

Success Thought of the Day – 6/28/18: Law of Association

JUNE 28, 2018
Written by James Rosseau

"You will become like the five people you associate with the most. This can be either a blessing or a curse." --Billy Cox

The law of association is amazingly powerful.  In my summary around Promise #1, embracing your passion, one of the four key points includes seeking out partners.  In other words, people who we are going to share our journey with towards our passion, purpose or cause with.  These people become trusted advisors and people you can count on as we make our way through the journey.

Taking a step back and thinking more casually about this, we might think, “I do not necessarily need everyone to be a passion partner per say, some folks are just friends,” and that is very true.  However, the principle still applies.

Just earlier this week I had the opportunity to visit with some great friends, Billy Dexter (partner at Heidrick and Struggles) and Melissa Wilson (owner of Networlding), discussing their book, Making Your Net Work: Mastering the Art and Science of Career and Business Networking, for an upcoming project I’m working on (hint :)).  Within it, Melissa makes the specific point that we should be spending 80% of our relationship building time with our primary circle.  The “Circle of Ten” as she calls it.

As with most things, time is a limited resource.   Be purposeful and intentional in its use, including whom you use it with.

Success Thought of the Day – 6/27/18: Leading direction

JUNE 27, 2018
Written by James Rosseau

A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go, but ought to be. - Rosalynn Carter.

Leading direction is a critical skill that we all must attain.  Some may argue that it is only necessary for those wishing to be in a “leadership position.”  However, we must consider that leading direction starts with ourselves.   Yes, we first must be able to lead ourselves in such a manner that people desire to follow us, irrespective of title or position.

Have you ever heard the phrase “we are always being watched?”   We are natural observers as people, listening to what people say, but also watching what they actually do.

Leading requires the ability to establish a vision of the desired end state – – for yourself, your team and/or an organization.  That vision becomes the compass and helps the leader guide, discerning between wants and needs and at times, consensus building towards something that may be counter to the vision.

Success Thought of the Day – 6/26/18: Balanced Success

Balanced Success

Let’s just start with the definition of the word balanced

  1. an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.
  2. a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions

It is very easy, with all the right intention, to get laser-focused on achieving a particular goal and lose sight of other things in our life.   Balance is key.

Using this particular thought of the day as a tip.  For example, ask family and friends for input as to whether or not you are on the road to balanced success.  This also help you accomplish your goals, as you’ll need to share them in that conversation, thereby creating new accountability partners (if they weren’t already)!

Success Thought of the Day – 6/22/18: Pursue our Purpose

JUNE 22, 2018
Written by James Rosseau

On June 7, George Clooney received the highest honor an actor can receive for a career in the film industry, the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award.  For many, such an achievement seems far-fetched and out of sight.  However, let’s take a step back.  The point is that we must try to pursue our purpose.

We know that a house is built brick-by-brick.  The first brick to the house of such an achievement as this is understanding your passion,  purpose or cause.  Unfortunately, many of us think about this,  perhaps even daydream about this and talk about it with friends, but do not take the time to visualize it and write it down.  The very act of writing it down begins the process of putting things in motion and making it real.

From there, we must establish our goals.   We need to be crystal clear about what we want to accomplish, if possible, quantitatively and qualitatively.

From there, we must establish our plans to meet those goals, creating a specific list of actions that we will take to meet those goals.

From there, we must take the actions we wrote down, daily.  Each day we need to take those actions and journal what we did, what the results were, what we learned and what we will do differently tomorrow to improve those results.

There is much more we can add to this in terms of establishing a full plan of action, but this is a short version of what it looks like to TRY to pursue our purpose.  For a longer version go to resources page and get the free workbook.

Have a blessed day!

Success Thought of the Day – 6/21/18: Overcoming challenges

JUNE 21, 2018
Written by James Rosseau

It is very easy for us to get caught up in the midst of a challenge and get discouraged, frustrated and in the end, outright want to quit.  As with all things, overcoming challenges is about how we view the situation, everything starts with our thoughts.

Joseph Sica tells a great story about a Donkey that sets the scene very well as follows:

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; the donkey just wasn’t worth retrieving.

He invited his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed shovels and began to throw dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down into the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt hitting his back, the donkey was doing something to help himself. He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take another step up. Pretty soon, everyone watched as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted away! They all screamed “we knew he could do it”

What I love is that the donkey simply had to outlast and outwit the shovelers, starting with his mindstate.   When I was younger, I remember the basketball player Charles Barkley once said, as it related to scoring, “I’m going to go over you, around you, or through you, but I am getting to the basket.”  That is all about attitude my friends.

No whatever the challenges are  – – shake it off and step up!

Have a blessed one!
